Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
